You can find Walley’s Shop at 191 Queen’s Road in Hastings - it is a beautiful 19th Century five story building, like so many in Queen’s Road, and it was originally built as a shop downstairs with owners accommodation above

The ground floor where Walley’s shop now resides has had many incarnations.  From 1870 it was home to Phillips Brothers Upholsterers and Cabinet Makers.  In 1900 George T Mackney (Gentlemen’s Tailor) opened at 191 and it became an ironmongers around 1909.  From the 1950s until recent times it was a launderette – The Wash Inn

When refurbishing the building we found a lot of advertisements for ‘S. F. Walley - builders ironmongers, tools and gardening equipment’.  Simon Walley owned the shop for many years and lived above with his family.  He appears to have returned from WWI in 1916 having been injured

He opened at 191 Queen’s Road and traded there for nearly 30 years.  It felt right to return such a longstanding name and part of Hastings history to the restored building

Like Simon Walley, we sell gardening tools but also plants, beautiful gifts including vintage and antique glass and gardening items. We aim to sell locally made or high quality British goods wherever possible – such as Bulldog tools and Haws watering cans

We sell tasty fresh ground Rave Coffee (a small Bristol based company) which can be enjoyed with our glass cafetieres. We also sell hand-picked Greek delicatessen products from Mount Pelion - unusual and delicious products such as spoon sweets, tomato jam and apple syrup which are difficult to find outside of Greece

Along with glass teapots and diffuser tea cups, also on our shelves are beautifully aromatic, hand picked teas which are naturally caffeine free and have proven medicinal properties. Our delicatessen items come from small family firms in Pelion, Greece which are renowned for excellence and which specialise in these products.   The teas come from Giannis Manos in Makrinitsa whose farm occupies the highest slopes of the mountain where rare teas can be grown due to the high altitude, warm climate and natural crystal clear springs

Over the coming months we will be expanding our offering with new ranges in the shop.  We try always to sell at less than online prices and hope you will visit and support us
